English Language Arts

English Language Arts 40S - Transactional Focus

 

Prerequisite: English Language Arts 20F & Applying ICT 1 & 2 15F (or equivalent)


The English Language Arts 40S – Transactional Focus course is a course that focuses on issues affecting society today. Evaluation is based on participation in class discussions, debates, and written work. The range of topics include novel study, short stories, media: film and television, current events and personal reflection. Attendance and participation in class is essential to success in this course.

English Language Arts 20F

 

Prerequisite: Skills Placement Assessment

                     
The English Language Arts 20F course is designed to help you gain further insights into yourself and others, and to expand your skills and knowledge in language arts. The course is composed of seven modules, each designed to enhance your learning. Upon completion, your reading, writing, viewing, speaking, representing and listening skills will be tested and enhanced.

Mathematics

Consumer Mathematics 45S

 

Prerequisite:  Consumer Mathematics 25S & Applying ICT 1 & 2 15F (or equivalent)


Consumer Mathematics 45S consists of two half-credit courses. Consumer Mathematics 45S Part V consists of four modules covering personal finance, government finances, design, measurement, and statistics. Consumer Mathematics 45S Part VI also has four modules covering investments, owning a vehicle, income tax, and variation and formulas.

Consumer Mathematics 25S

 

Prerequisite: Skills Placement Assessment & Applying ICT 1 & 2 15F (or equivalent)


Consumer Mathematics 25S consists of two half-credit courses. Consumer Mathematics 25S Part I consists of five modules including gross wages and percents, spreadsheets, trigonometry, time cards, and spatial geometry. Consumer Mathematics 25S Part II also has five modules covering probability, banking, geometry, statistics, and consumer spending.

Applied Math 40S

 

Prerequisite: Skills Placement Assessment or Applied Math 20S (or equivalent), excellent technology and calculator skills. Consultation with instructor may be required


In Applied Math 40S students will study the following topics: matrix modeling, vectors, personal finance, probability, variability and statistical analysis, design and measurement, applications of periodic functions, and sequences. This course is geared toward students planning to pursue post-secondary studies.

Applied Math 20S

 

Recommendations: Excellent technology and calculator skills. Consultation with instructor may be required

In Applied Math 20S students will study the following topics: technical communication, spreadsheets, exploring math using technology, linear models and patterns, 2D and 3D projects, relations/functions, co-ordinate geometry, measurement technology, trigonometry, and data management and analysis.

Business & Computer Courses

Please note: Some of our computer courses are currently under development. This is partly due to the fact that we are in the process of upgrading our software/materials and partly due to changes in the computer/technology curriculum. Approximate release date for courses under development is September 2010.

 

Accounting Principles 30S

 

Prerequisite: Applying ICT 1 & 2 15F (or equivalent) or proof of strong computer skills specifically Microsoft Excel 2007)


This course is designed to introduce basic accounting principles and theory with the integration of technology. Topics covered include Basic concepts, Accounting Process, Cash Control, Payroll Accounting & Income Tax and Computerized Accounting. The course has five modules with various lessons in each one. The lessons instruct on the theory and practical application of a topic and then offer hands-on assignments.

Accounting Systems 40S

 

Prerequisite: Accounting Principles 30S (no exceptions)


This course builds on and refines the concepts, skills, and understandings learned in Accounting Principles 30S. Students will learn how to keep accounting records using a computerized software program called Simply Accounting. The course includes projects that have students apply accounting topics in a simulated business scenario.

Applying Information and Communication Technology 1 & 2 15F (Applying ICT 1 & 2 15F)

 

Prerequisite: None


This course introduces students to the basic functions of a personal computer, the Windows operating system (Windows XP), file and data management, word processing (Microsoft Word 2007), spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel 2007), and presentation (PowerPoint 2007) software. This course is designed to first build confidence in operating a computer as well as prepare students for the work force where knowledge of Microsoft Office products are essential.

Keyboarding 25S

 

Prerequisite: None


This course uses the Microsoft Word program in conjunction with keyboarding materials to introduce students to basic skills in keyboarding. Topics covered include: touch typing, special characters, error correction and composing at the keyboard. The goal of the course is a typing speed of 25 words per minute with an accuracy of no more than one error per minute.

Automated Office 40S (under development)

 

Prerequisite: Knowledge of the Windows operating system and strong file management skills


This advanced course uses the word processing software Microsoft Word 2007. The course begins with a general introduction to word processing components, and then covers the advanced features of MS Word. Students will be provided with real life scenarios through "on the job" styled exercises.

Data Collection and Analysis 35S (under development)

 

Prerequisite: Knowledge of the Windows operating system and strong file management skills


The purpose of this course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to collect, organize, manipulate, and analyze data to solve problems using spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel 2007).

Relational Databases 35S (under development)

 

Prerequisite: Knowledge of the Windows operating system and strong file management skills


The purpose of this course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to plan, create, and use a relational database (Microsoft Access 2007) built in a Database Management Systems.

Desktop Publishing 35S (under development)

 

Prerequisite: Knowledge of the Windows operating system and strong file management skills


The focus of this course is to provide students with practical experience in desktop publishing. Students will create a variety of publications including flyers, newsletters, and cards using Microsoft Publisher 2007.

Physical Sciences

Biology 40S

 

Prerequisite: Biology 30S (recommended by not necessary)


This course is designed to assist students in achieving a greater understanding of human genetics, bioenergetics, the animal kingdom, and the plant kingdom. Topics covered include DNA, RNA, protein synthesis, chromosomes, dominant and recessive traits, cell division and reproduction, genetic diseases, bioenergetics and photosynthesis, classification systems, variety in plants and animals and the characteristics of angiosperms.

Biology 30S

 

Prerequisite: None


Biology 30S is a recommended prerequisite for Biology 40S. The course is separated into nine modules. They are cell structure and function, biochemistry, digestion, transportation, respiratory system, excretory system, nervous system, endocrine system, and reproduction and development

Physics 40S

 

Prerequisite: Physics 30S


The Physics 40S course assists students in interpreting the environment around them. Students will investigate waves, electrical and magnetic fields, static and current electricity, electric motors and generators and related concepts.

Physics 30S

 

Prerequisite: Senior 2 Math and strong Algebra skills


The Physics 30S course is a prerequisite for Physics 40S. There are seven modules that cover linear kinematics, vectors, Newton’s Laws of motion, projectile and circular motion, momentum and impulse, work and energy, and heat.

Social Sciences

Community Service Student-Initiated Project 41G

This Student-Initiated Project Credit Option enables students to receive credit while making a contribution to their community through volunteering 110 hours of their time. Prior to starting a volunteer service, students are required to set up their objectives in civic skills, knowledge and attitudes.
 

 

Geography 40S

 

Prerequisite: None

This course takes you around the world through various topics such as population distribution, growth, food production, world resources and energy as well as implications for the future.

Psychology 40S

 

Prerequisite: None

This course will introduce you to many topics within the field of psychology. It is intended to help you gain an understanding of human behavior, how it helps us to understand ourselves as well as others in the society you live in. You will come to appreciate the many fields in psychology that could be further explored at University or College. Topics include introduction to psychology, human development, the mind, and breakdown and adjustment with regards to stress, health and psychological disorders.

Law 40S

 

Prerequisite: English Language Arts 40S


The course includes a survey/overview of law in general and of specific aspects of the Canadian legal system. The focus is on basic principles of law in areas such as the nature and necessity of law, criminal law, civil rights and liberties, family law and tort and contract law. The purpose of the course is to familiarize the students on the structures and processes of the legal-judicial system and the basic elements of law as they apply to the society in which students live.

Family Studies 40S

 

Prerequisite: None


Learn practical skills and knowledge in the areas of parenting, money management, relationships, the well being of families, and how to succeed in life as a productive, functioning member of society. You will learn more about yourself, your family, and to appreciate the variety and diversity among families today. You'll also learn to make more conscious personal decisions you are confronted with in daily life.

Physical Education 40F

 

Prerequisite: None


This new program consists of two components: 1) Core: Includes 27 hours of theory which involves fitness management, nutrition, personal development and healthy relationships.

2) Physical Activity: Students must complete 83 hours of physical fitness (of their choosing).
